My boys started back to school today. It was a bittersweet morning. I hope they are having a good day. Both boys are "packers" (what the teachers call the kids who bring their lunches from home) most days for lunch. Unless the lunch menu says pizza or chicken sandwich they are ok with me fixing their lunches for them. My oldest has become picky with what he deems acceptable in his packed lunch but my youngest is usually happy with what ever I fix him. Sure my guys like the fruit cups but sometimes I try to think outside of the bowl and I use the drained fruit pieces from the fruit cup to make snacks/desserts like my frushi (fruit sushi). I use fruit strips, fruit leather or fruit roll ups along with some tapioca pudding and diced fruit pieces (like from the Del Monte 4 pack fruit cups) to make the frushi and the boys both love finding frushi in their lunch and snack bags.

I've seen children at the lunch tables who buy the cafeteria tray lunch and pick at what is on the tray and throw most of it in the trash when lunch time is over. Most days I pack a little extra in Caleb and Kyle's lunch bags so that they can do the lunchbox trades or share with friends if asked or if they want to.

Have your children started back to school yet? Going back the middle of August seems early to me. When I was growing up we never went back to school before Labor Day. It made the summer feel super short this year for sure. I feel like both of my boys make pretty good choices when it comes to choosing what they would like to have in their lunches and being sure to eat until they are full and not staying busy talking or playing at the lunch table instead of eating.
