Mama Bee Does {Bake}- Care Bears Rainbow Cake

I waited to long to order some Care Bear figures online to get them in the time I needed them. Luckily I had a Sleepy time bear in my cake kit from my childhood. This cake was for KC (the other blog contributor here at Mama Bee Does). It was a last moment design change from Power Puff Girls to Care Bears. I think it turned out decently and everyone seemed to enjoy it at the party.

To get the rainbow look of the rainbow cake I took a white cake mix and portioned it out in to 6 (1 cup measuring cup per bowl) bowls and added food coloring drops to each bowl to get the color I wanted. I did not use the recommended number of drops per the back of the food coloring box. A little really does go a long ways so add a few at a time and stir because you may get your cake colors too dark.

Once I have my Wilton cake pans prepped I added 3 colors to each pan, one at at time. Pour the colored mixes in the center of the pan each time and as you add each color on top of the other it will spread the previously added colors towards the edges of the pan. And yes for the rainbow technicality, I did add my colors to the cake pans wrong 🙁 No one noticed or at least said anything about it but I knew the mistake and it irked me.

The rainbow is gum paste rolled in to "logs" of each color and then rolled out with my fondant roller. I left it to dry on the plastic case from a Tinkerbell figures box cover because I wanted it to dry with the curve of the plastic. I covered the plastic with cling wrap and sprayed it with Pam which turned out to not be a good idea because the gum paste kept sliding off the wrap from the spray. I left the rainbow out to harden for 2 days and it still ended up losing its curve once I placed it on the cake.

Once the cakes were baked and cooled, I added the buttercream icing. I left it white and airbrushed it blue so that it wasn't straight blue icing. I wanted to white peaking through in spots to make it the more airy look. For the clouds I filled a Wilton icing bag with only a icing tip coupler on it to give it the "fluffy" cloud look. I think I went a little cloud happy with it though. Lesson learned for next time though right? I usually smooth my icing out completely but for this I wanted the wispy look of the sky so I smoothed it out with just my spatula where as I usually go over the cake with a Viva paper towel to get the ultimate smoothness.
