Copycat Dairy Queen chili sauce DQ hot dog chili

This recipe was shared with me years ago. I can make up a big batch of the copycat Dairy Queen hot dog chili and freeze it in canning jars to have our own supply of chili. This is Daddy B's preferred type of chili for his hot dogs. Chili is the only thing he eats on his hot dogs and not just any canned store bought chili can cut the mustard for him 😉 I was spending all most $3 a can on the Armour no bean chili each time we were having hotdogs. I wish I had been given this DQ hot dog chili sauce recipe sooner.

Copycat Dairy Queen Hot Dog Chili

    Ingredients:
    1 lb. ground chuck meat
    ¼ cup finely chopped onion
    23 oz. tomato juice
½ cup chile sauce (I use the Heinz brand)
    1 Tablespoon Chili powder
    1-2 Tablespoon brown sugar
    *optional* sprinkle of corn meal
    *optional* 2 Tablespoons BBQ sauce

    Directions:
In a large skillet, cook (scramble) the ground chuck meat and onions together. Drain the grease off. Add the tomato juice, chile sauce, chili powder and brown sugar (and optional BBQ sauce if you want it) to the cooked meat in the skillet. Simmer the chili until it is as thick as you want it. You may add the sprinkle of corn meal to help thicken up the chili if desired. Spoon over your hotdogs and remember your younger days of sitting at DQ enjoying a meal without having to leave the house.

** You may also cook the beef and onions on the stove top and when you want to add the other ingredients add it all to a crock pot and let it cook 1-2 hours.

    Serves: 16
    Ingredients
    • 1 lb. ground chuck meat
    • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
    • 23 oz. tomato juice
    • ½ cup chile sauce (I use the Heinz brand)
    • 1 Tablespoon Chili powder
    • 1-2 Tablespoon brown sugar
    • *optional* sprinkle of corn meal
    • *optional* 2 Tablespoons BBQ sauce
    Instructions
    1. In a large skillet, cook (scramble) the ground chuck and onions together. Drain the grease off.
    2. Add the tomato juice, chile sauce, chili powder and brown sugar (and optional BBQ sauce if you want it) to the cooked meat in the skillet.
    3. Simmer the chili until it is as thick as you want it. You may add the sprinkle of corn meal to help thicken up the chili if desired.
    4. Spoon over your hotdogs and remember the days of sitting at DQ enjoying a meal.
    5. *** You may also cook the ground chuck and onions on the stove top and then add the other ingredients with the cooked meat all to a crock pot and let it cook 1-2 hours.
Have you made the DQ chili sauce before? Do you do just chili sauce on your hotdogs or do you add other toppings with it? Usually I am a mustard, ketchup, and chili person but sometimes I like just chili and ketchup.
